Should Boys and Girls be Taught Separately?

There has always been private all male or female schools.  The advantages and disadvantages can be debated.  Eliminating the distractions that may occur in coed classes can improve performance of the students in those classes.  Learning to adapt to the different learning styles of different genders might be a sacrifice of being in a single gender class. Many public schools are now considering using this strategy to improve learning for all students, especially in the core areas. Read the article by Laura Marquez from ABC News. The article gives the perspective from both side of the argument. There seems be some legal roadblocks, but as the pressure is put on schools to produce a better product, more creatively needs to be considered.  The arguments for single genders classes are growing louder. Is it time for a change?

I am intrigued by the idea.  I don't believe having math or literacy in a single gender class is going to diminish a student's ability to get along with different genders. There will still be many opportunities to associate with the opposite sex and build relationships necessary to be successful in the future. I see more positives than negatives.  Maybe it's worth a try.

What do you think?  Be sure to defend your answer or response to a post with evidence from the article or another source.  Your opinion matters, but it matters more when there is a professional standing behind you.

  1. I dont think our school should have classes with just boys and just girls. I think certain classes could do that. Boys learn differnet than girls do and we understand things different which is good for Litercay because when we do our discussion we can share our thinking.

    1. Ally, in the following post, noticed that during discussion, girls primarily discussed with girls, and boys with boys. Do you think that would happen in your class? Think about who you go to first when discussion starts.

    2. I think we should sill talk about the Girl's and Boy's being in seperate classes so other people could more back ground information. In my opinion I don't think it should happen and if my parent's told me that I had to g to a school with saprate gender's I would've tryed but if I didnt like it I'd just tell the school to step up and fight agains't seprate gender classes same the parent's. Why would any school's try to fight the law? It's not right.

  2. I think we should be able to choose if we want to go to a same gender school or not because everyone has different learning styles. When we discussed this article in class we, all went into boys groups and girls groups. That shows who we, as students are more comfortable working with. One thing that I disagree on is, girls should still be able to learn about science or engineering. It isn't just guy stuff.

    1. I'm not sure they want to keep girls from learning science and engineering. Because girls learn differently, maybe removing the distraction of boys will promote better thinking without the sense of being judged.

    2. I agree with Ally because it is true that you are probaly more comforable with your gender. Sense its only some classes you still can be social with the other gender. plus, the same thing kind of happened in my class the girls went into ther seperate groups and the boys went in to there seperate groups.

  3. I think that we should have same gender classes in core classes because of how competitive college is today. Everyone want's to get into a good college. When it comes to getting into college your grades throughout school are a big deal. It can determine if you get a scholarship too. In the classroom, in both middle school and high school some coed classes affect concentration. Which can affect grades too. If we take away the distraction it will make better grades, and a better chance at good colleges. If we don't do this some of the students won't get the best chance at college they can get and everyone deserves a good chance at their college of choice, or the best college they can get. This is why I think we should have same gender classes.

  4. I think we should get to chose to have same gender classes because girls are shy around boys.Boys are shy of girls. But, girls and boys need to be together to work on social skills with each other because if a girl moves and there are no same gender classes like she is used to then she gets into fights with boys.

    1. But what if all the Girl's move's away except for one. Then what will the teacher's do? Wil the teacher's say we want the Girl's and Boy's in classe's all together so the teacher's could get there job back.

    2. NO,for one why would all the girls move away and two there would be more teachers teaching because there would be more classes if you split up the girs and the boys because you need a teacher for every class.

  6. I think that same gender classes could help some people. For me my opion is no, because you need to learn how to get along with each other, and if you have math are literacy with each other you can use that thinking to get a better answer then what you would of thought before you were working toghter? Wouldnt you want to see each other getting along without reminding yourself that they are diffrent genders.

  7. Seperate classes do have its advanages, but is it really necessary? I do not think there is anything wrong with the way learning is now and for the people who are uncomfortable with another gender then a seperate class might be good for them or they just need to socialize more.

  8. I think in classes like math, gym, and since we should have them but other classes we should have together.
I would love to do this but it could get hard to learn with just girls or just boys in a class room they might destract each other
    or mess around

  9. Girls and boys should have their own answer!! The girls and boys should be paying attention when the teacher is talking. The girls and boys have to be tought different things separately and some spefic subjects.

  11. Why do you think some kids want to be separated? Did you read the article? It explains the benefits of gender specific classes.

  12. In my school the girls always gather with other girls and same with the boys. I don't really have a sure opinion on this, but from my point of view the older we get the more we separate from the opposite gender. In elementary school we mixed well, but in middle school everybody separates of their own choice.
