Apple Blossom Books Promotes Reading at Merrill

On Tuesday, February 26, Michael McArther, from Apple Blossom Books, came to Merrill Middle School to present a book share to our first and second hour literacy classes.  Apple Blossom Books is an independent book store located in the City Center in downtown Oshkosh.

Mr. McArther brought in titles of books that will supplement the various civil rights and human rights titles that we are already reading in our classes for literature circles. He introduced us to a variety of authors and genres that dealt with human rights around the world and throughout history. We want to thank Mr. McArther for having the courage to meet with our classes and share his knowledge of books.

Were there any titles that interested you the most? Why? What are some of the human rights conflicts that are occurring in the books you are reading.  Be sure to identify the book and author in case someone else wants to read the book next?

-Mr. Kohl

  2. I think Mr.McArther did a good job sharing with us some of the books he read. In the book 'Petey', Petey can't talk or do many movements. He meets many different people during the time he is at the Insane Asylum. I think if I read more books that Mr.McArther showed us I will have more thinking.
    Thank You Mr.McArther!

  4. My book that I am reading is called Petey. It is about a man named Petey that has cerebral palsy and people judge him. They think that he is retarded and can not think. But a boy named Trevor sees how nice of a person Petey really is. Thank you to Mr. McArther for coming to our class and telling us about other books that are related to human and civil rights.

  8. I really enjoyed Mr. McArther's visit. For every book he shared with us, he gave a great description of what it's about the main ideas of the story. One book that stood out to me a lot was "The Breadwinner". It has to do with women's rights in Afghanistan. This story reminded me of an article I read about a 14-year old girl who was shot by the taliban because she was fighting for girls to have the right to an education.

  12. Thank you Mr.McArthur for sharing the books to our class. I think that the book " The astonishing life of octavian nothing" sounds really interesting, because I wonder if they will find out if the african american boy can learn. It relates to "Petey" because, Petey cant move or talk so people don't think he has a mind or thinks like them. Thank you Mr.McArthur.

  14. I was reading a book called Slob. In the book slob, an over weight boy thinks that a boy named Mason stole his oreos. Mason had a half burnt face, and people said that he carried around a switchblade in his sock. They were stereotyping him, and stereotyping lead to bad things. Thank you for coming and sharing books with us, because i needed some new ideas for books that I should read next. One book that sounded interesting to me was The Breadwinner, because I read a similar book like it, and it was very good. I look forward to reading most of the books you shared. Thank you Mr.McArthur.

  15. I think the book: Looking like the enemy, sounds like a book with stereo types in it, because just because you look like the enemy you get tortured or just get treated unfairly. That book i think connects with the book: Slob. In the book slob one of the side characters: Mason, is stereo typed because he has a big scare on the side of his face and he doesn't talk much. The main character: Owen, stereo types Mason too, until Owen knows how Mason actually got that scar and saw Mason for who he really is. I think Mr.McArther did a very good job explaining all the books and giving lots of details on each book. Thank you for coming to share your books with us.

  18. Thank you, Mr.McArther for visiting our 6th grade class. I really in joyed all of the information about the books, that you shared.

I have been reading a book called Bamboo People, by Mitali Perkins. My book is about a Burmese boy named Chiko, and he is taken away from his family to server in the war between the Burmese, and the Karrani people. He has to learn how to get along with a lot of different types of people both Burmese, and Karrani. I have learned that even if someone dislikes a person, or in this case a race . Not all people are the same, so you cant hate them all, and you must learn to treat people nicely in till you meet them.

  20. Thank you for visiting our class, Mr. McArther. I enjoyed how you promoted nonfiction books as well as fiction. I enjoyed this, since I am interested in doing a nonfiction book on civil rights, and you gave me some topics. Well one of the topics of human rights in the book I'm reading is child labor, and I didn't see a lot of topics about it. Although, many other issues were covered.
