Home Schooling: A proper alternative to public education?

We have been studying different ways that students can be educated in the twenty-first century. Technology, high stakes testing, and school funding have created a whirlpool of change in education in the past ten years. Homeschooling is a growing trend being used by parents to battle these changes, and try to provide the best possible education for their children. The following publications have different points of view on the topic of homeschooling.

The Pros and Cons of Homeschooling by Isabel Shaw from the Family Education website. This article is a quick background resource to discuss some of the issues when considering homeschooling as an option for a quality education.

Homeschool.com: The number one homeschool community is a website devoted solely to parents who are homeschooling or considering homeschooling.

The Real Cons of Homeschooling is an entry written by Tammy Takahashi from the blog, Just Enough, Nothing More listing 10 reasons homeschooling might not be the best educational choice.

Sharon Chen, a reporter for Fox News in San Diego did a news story entitled, Interest in Homeschooling Surges after the shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. This article brings to light a whole new reason parents may consider homeschooling in today's increasingly violent society.

Let the debate begin here.  We discussed this in class.  You have read the pros and cons.  What do you think about homeschooling as an option to improve education?  Be sure to make your thoughts complete.  Site the resources to support your opinions.

  1. I think it will work in some areas. Homeschool will work beacause it protects you from bullies most of the time, not having to fit in, and not having problems with trends meaning how you look or cloths. It does not work beacause you won't know how to work with other people when you grow up.

  2. To me I would rather be in a school with other people than at home by my self.

    1. I agree with you because, I feel that I learn better when I have other people there to help me like my teachers, and peers. Why do you think that public schooling is better?

    2. I agree that I would rather be at a public school, but some kids feel different because they might understand their parents better than a random teacher. I think that public schooling is better because you have more opportunities and you have more experience. If you do homeschooling, you may not be able to do sports or participate in public opportunities.

    3. I agree with you guys because if you have home school you wont have much friends to hang out with, but it's their choice to choose if they want home school or not. Some kids are better in home school then public school, and some are better in public school then home school.

  3. I'm with the cons because they don't make good socal skills and won't work well in groups when they get a job

    1. I don't agree, even if your home schooled you can still interact with other people, just maybe not as much.

  4. I stand with the pros because I think that a lot more learning can go on if you are being taught one on one. You do not have to wait for someone to quiet down so the teacher can start talking again. On the other hand I think special needs kids should not be homeschooled because they need to deal with the bullys or people that make fun of them because they disabled. There will always be those people.

    1. I agree with Lucas because, being with someone that you are comfortable with one on one you don't have to be afraid if you got the problem wrong.

  6. I think homeschooling is good for some reasons and bad for other reasons.I think its good because all the attention is on you, so therefore its probably going to be easier to learn.Plus, you wont have distractions from other kids and you don't have the teacher waiting for the whole class to quite down. Its bad because yu are not social with other people and I think that would affect you once you got older when you have to get a job. Plus, yes you have neighbor friends but you don't get to see them as much as you would in school.

  7. I disagree with Homeschooling. I would rather go to school with many kids then be home with just an adult. You need to learn how to work with others and discuss what you learned with others. On the other hand Homeschooling is good because you don't have to worry about being bullied or picked on for what you say or what you do, but later in life you will have to know who to handle getting bullied. When you are homeschooled you might not get the best collage degree because your parents don't have a teaching degree.I would not want to be Homeschooled..

  8. I think that homeschooling isn't always a good idea. Kids should be able to interact with others and learn what kind of people they might have to deal with in the future. Teachers can be inspiring people and they won't have a job if everyone starts homeschooling. Then again, some kids don't work well with others and aren't accepted at school. Some kids might be better off if they are learning at home. They might not feel safe at school.

  9. I kind of disagree with Lucas when you said that the special need kids need to come to school to deal with bully's.Everyone has to learn how to handle bully's so i think that I am more pro than con

  10. I think that homeschooling isn't a good idea. I think that all kids should be able to interact with other kids for there future. What would happen if they didn't go to a public school for middle school, Then in high school they were getting bullied they wouldn't know who to tell are where to go.

  11. Why do humans exist? Why are we here when all we do in the world is pollute it and drive all other animals out and there's only conflict in the human world? All we do is torture all others? Why did God make us?
