The Boston Marathon Blast - Carefully analyzing the details requires higher level thinking.

The Boston Marathon is one of the oldest and most recognized races in sports history.  Thousands of runners and spectators participate in this city stopping event every year.  Unfortunately it also attracted the attention of someone else, whose intentions we may never know, but thanks to a series of deadly bomb blasts at the finish line, the nostalgia of the race has changed forever.  According to the latest report, at least three are dead, and many more injured, many of them seriously.  One witness, a Gulf War veteran, stated that it reminded him of the attacks they would experience and respond to in the Middle East.  It's no wonder that terrorism, international or domestic, is labeled to this tragic event.  I'm sure there will be stories of heroism, and many speculations as to how and why. Now we need to be careful with our judgement of strangers,  as authorities try to piece together the clues and go after those responsible.

Read and view the most updated news: CNN U.S., New York Times, ABC News,

Already I am disappointed in the coverage of the events and how our media competes with each other to build this news story inaccurately and inappropriately. Last night alone the death toll went from two, to three, and then to over 20!  How can there be that much discrepancy? One source had other devices discovered among the discarded bags in the aftermath and chaos of the explosions, while sources this morning mention that no other devices were found.  This morning, unconfirmed reports placed a man at the scene carrying two backpacks before the explosions, and an Arab looking man is being sought after for questioning.  In the name of reporting the news first and best, how many misleading facts and unwarranted claims  are we allowed to forgive?

Covering current events in class has built a background knowledge base in my students that will now allow us to analyze these events more critically than we could only a few months ago. We have grown in maturity and our ability to rationally evaluate a situation.  We can now make comparisons to past events, and compare players in these events to people who have been there before today, or those we have recently read about.  We can make predictions and inferences based on fact, and be able to show evidence to support it. We can pass judgment on the tragic events today as young adults should.

It's time to take the news personally.  What is your reaction to the events at the Boston Marathon? How will this change things?  How will this affect you personally?  Be sure to support your comments with facts from your background knowledge or from the links provided.

  1. The bomb might have killed many of people. I wonder how the families felt when they heard the news! I also wonder what kind of sick person would do such a thing!

  2. I feel so bad for all the families that has someone that has died or is wounded in this tragedy. The Boston marathon is big deal. The best runners go to that race and to finish that race is a big accomplishment. When you cross the finish line a bomb goes off and nearly kills you. You would probably be scared of what is to come and not happy. I wonder if people will race in the Boston marathon in years to come after what happened yesterday.

  4. I think that the Boston Marathon bombing is a perfect example of the message in the train poem. Society is getting more, and more twisted and now little kids are starting to worry about being killed when they are playing outside. I agree with Lucas when he said that people might not join the marathon. I wonder if the effect of this event will be another war

    1. I agree with Dion about the Train song. Kids should not have to be afraid of things they should not have to worry about. They should be afraid of terrorist attacks or bombings.

    2. People shouldn't have to worry about getting killed when they go outside or run a race. People still get nervous when doing a major event that could have something like a bomb for the winners. I agree with Lucas and Dion.

    3. I agree with all three of you. Why should we always have to take a precaution for everything we do, and have to be prepared for something like that to happen? People shouldn't have to worry about bombs going off while running or going to work or even going outside.

  5. I think The Boston Marathon Race will be talked about. I agree with Dion that society is getting more and more twisted. People might not go to the race next year. President Obama, I think did a great job with his response. I think President Obama did a great job because he said he will find out who did this.

  6. As hard as it may be to believe that there are people out there who would do something like this and kill this many people and injure even more that were killed. This does happen and what made this crysis be a little less worse than what it could have been is the emergency teams at the race they were already taking people in for treatment and then the police and firemen were there faster than ever this made it so less lives were lost.Non the less this still happened and many families are forced to deal with the loss of their family members.

  7. I agree about the train poem and I also think the race will have less participants although I doubt the race will be bombed again. I do not think the result will be another war as we don't yet know who set off the bombs. I wonder what kind of bombs they were as it may offer clues about who planted the devices. An independent terrorist or a terrorist group.

    1. I agree with Leif. The Boston Marathon will probably not be bombed again, but whoever did this will probably bomb another event with a lot of people involved that is in a very populated city. I think people who want to run the Boston Marathon should still go because of how unlikely the same thing will happen twice there.

  8. I felt that who ever targeted the Boston marathon did it with the fact that the last mile was honored to sandy hook and its vary devastating that some body would make such a poor choice.

  9. This is what we can tell our kids about like our parents did with 9/11 where we were what we were doing stuff like that, when I saw this on the news I thought the fire fighters must be scarred for life there was blood every where people with half of there heads off people with no legs and all that stuff so I feel bad for all of those people and thankful for the fire fighters and sorry for family's that lost friends or other family.

  10. I think the Boston event have to be doing something with the bombing and sabotage in Iraq right now, its like people are thinking that life is not that much important anymore so lets end everybody's life.

  11. I think this bombing is related to many events that has happened before. I wonder if they will have the Boston Marathon anymore? This tragedy will probably scare some people, not just in Boston but around the world. I think this is really sad. The victim's families are worried and so are other people. I don't know what's going to happen to the world, because every time an event like this happens we get more and more worried. Will the world become a place so bad that we will have to hide in our house and do everything in our house?

    1. I agree with you that once a tragedy happens people tend to think that it was terrorists. But many of the bad things that have happened over the years have been done by people from the United States.

  13. Unfortunately since society is being desensitized to violence to the point where we will not even remember this in 5 years because everything on TV is violence. A side effect of this is people won't think twice about killing someone or doing something like this.

  14. The events in Boston have only made minor changes. It has caused our government to put higher sanctions on Boston and the areas around Boston. If this does turn out to be a terrorist - it's not yet decided who attacked us - the government will probably step up its homeland security. Anyone could have done this though there are hundreds of groups who would do something against our government, since every government isn't perfect. We can only hope that the government catches someone.

  15. I think the bombing in Boston was a horrible thing. But there were other states that showed their respect for Boston. They ran 5ks and they also ran half marathons. They even had a moment of silence for the people who were injured or killed. One thing that was sad was the little 8 year old boy who died, he had a sign that said"No More Hurting People". Sadly he died running the marathon:(
